CLASSROOM COURSE

InDepth: The Gospel of John

A New Genesis for a New Creation

We will spend thirteen weeks exploring this simplest and most complex of the four earliest tellings of Jesus’ still unfinished story. Writing independently of Mark’s synoptic (common view) gospel template, John writes a unique “glad tidings,” arguably at least a half a generation after Mark, Matthew and Luke. Beginning at 35,000 feet, he declares himself a witness to the flesh-and-blood presence of the ancient wisdom/word, in-the-flesh coming of the glory of God. Self-consciously, John writes for the new covenant community a new Genesis in which he announces the beginning of God’s new creation in King Jesus. We will discuss the implications of John’s new Genesis for our situation today.
