Paul Retells the Transforming Story

There was a great crisis coming for God’s new creation people, growing up in the midst of a potentially hostile empire. So Paul, the story-teller, wrote to a congregation of people, most of whom he did not know, concerning another vexing question: how should the Jews who had made allegiance with Jesus relate to those Gentiles who had done the same. To do so, the apostle stepped back and told the story of how the God who had once claimed one, single people for himself in the midst of a miserable and broken world, had now claimed full authority over all of that beginning-to-be-redeemed creation. In this course, we will read through Paul’s greatest work and note the flow of his re-telling of Israel’s old story while he lays out his broad understanding of the means and method by which God had laid claim on every thing and every one he had ever made. As Paul masterfully weaves the urgency of his hearers’ faithful response to the glad tidings into the argument and the story, he also prepares his hearers for the storm he saw coming. We will listen for how we now might practically and concretely respond to his message in faith today.
