CLASSROOM COURSE
InDepth: Paul's Prison Epistles
Covert Notes to New Churches
This is a study of St. Paul’s letters from prison: Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon and Philippians. In this course we learn together how to read these letters as Paul wrote them; in between the lines, in the shadow of an empire! In these letters the apostle carefully taught his audiences to see themselves not as subjects of Rome but as citizens of a new creation-kingdom. Rather than subjects of Caesar, they were subject to the authority of a messiah/king who had shamed the current empire by making peace through the worst nightmare the empire could deliver, a deadly, ugly, torturous cross. Does loving God mean discovering and practicing kingdom living? Does kingdom living implicitly subvert an empire? We shall discover answers to these and other questions together. We will discuss the impact these “notes from an apostle” might have again.
