SMALL GROUP & SELF STUDY KIT

InDepth: Luke/Acts

Books about Glad Tidings, Spoken and Lived

Each gospel is a portrait, not a snapshot, of Jesus, God’s messiah. This course is a  treatment of one evangelist’s telling of what was said by and about Jesus, and about what happened after that. Luke, arguably the only Gentile New Testament writer, had kept his own careful notes as he dug deep into the origins and young traditions of Christianity. Not content to write of what Jesus had said, Luke wanted to see whether Christians, both those close to and those far from Jesus’ Galilean roots, actually did what Jesus had said. For Luke therefore, one book, a gospel, was not enough. He needed to write the story of what happened next. We will read and discuss both Luke and Acts and look for Luke’s special themes throughout both books. As always, this course gets into the culture and times of the writer and his readers, but as always, this is no history course. Our goal will be to hear Luke’s unique telling of the story for our lives, our culture and times. In addition to the Studies in Grace participant guide, this course utilizes three published texts: Luke for Everyone; Acts for Everyone, Part One and Acts for Everyone, Part Two, all authored by N. T. Wright.
