CLASSROOM COURSE
A Year in the Bible: Term 4
The Covenant of Grace is Firmly Established
During this term we look at how God, through the Spirit-led apostles and through God's sovereign control of the events of the time, preserved and established the infant church in the face of persecution, confusion and heresy, in the midst of a growingly hostile empire.
Term 3 brought us into a study of the early letters of the apostle Paul. In the first sessions of this term we complete our reading and study of Paul's letters, beginning with his great epistle to the Roman Christians, Session 40. In the following two sessions we cover the rest of the Pauline material; the Prison Epistles: Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon and Philippians (41) and the Pastoral Epistles: I Timothy, Titus and II Timothy (42). As the young God-movement expanded and put down roots, opposition to it began to grow and eventually, the Romans discovered they had a young, vigorous rival kingdom growing up in their midst. In II Timothy we realize that they have begun to work to stamp that rival out. A number of tracts and letters and even a gospel were written to encourage those who were experiencing persecution. Three sessions deal with these New Testament books; Hebrews (43), the letter of James and the Gospel of Matthew (44) and the two letters of Peter and the letter of Jude (45). In Sessions 46 and 47 we begin the study of the last New Testament writer, the apostle John, beginning with what was arguably his first work, The Revelation of Jesus Christ to John. In Session 48, we read and study his letters, I John, II John and III John. Then, for two sessions, 49 and 50, we turn to our last book study, ending with the Gospel of John. At last, in Session 51 we look at the great themes which we have noted all the way through the Scriptures and our study of them, and in Session 52, we consider the many further implications, the "Now what?" of all we have read and learned during a year spent in an intensive study of the Bible.
